17OctoberKaunas offers concerts, exhibitions and cinema screenings throughout the day. Venues and galleries on Laisvės alėja and in the Old Town are worth a visit after work or between classes. Choose what suits your mood, from an acoustic set to a contemporary art exhibition.
Žaliakalnis has smaller cultural venues hosting intimate performances. For cinema, look for premieres or retrospective screenings. For something quieter, try a photography exhibition and take your time discovering local artists.
Nemunas Island often hosts larger gatherings and outdoor performances, especially in warmer weather. Check whether a market or sports event is taking place today. If so, join in and enjoy the city atmosphere.
For something a little different today, look for an improvisation night or an open-mic event giving new voices a stage. Either can make an enjoyable evening without much advance planning.
For a quick plan today, follow Laisvės alėja to the Old Town, visit Kaunas Castle, then head towards the rivers’ confluence. Paths along the Nemunas and Neris suit both a gentle stroll and a brisk walk. You may come across street musicians or, on a windy day, kites in the air.
For a panoramic view, take the Aleksotas funicular up the hill. The city and a bend in the Nemunas open out below. Sunset is particularly striking here, and the steps offer a pleasant route back down.
If you have only an hour, walk from the castle to the rivers’ confluence and back. Look into courtyards along the way for details of old Kaunas. Listen for church bells and explore lanes that are easy to overlook on a map.
For a quieter walk away from the crowds, turn into smaller lanes and courtyards with old balconies and stairways. These discoveries let you experience the city at a slower pace.
Ąžuolynas is a good setting for a run, a walk or a yoga mat on the grass. Old oak trees provide shade, with birds and squirrels along the paths. If you like to keep up a pace, a circular route makes it easy to track your distance.
Follow the rivers by bicycle or scooter towards Nemunas Island. Take a break on the grass, stretch your legs or watch an event if one is taking place. In the evening, choose a quiet stretch beside the Neris and listen to the water.
For more of a workout, try the stairways between Žaliakalnis and the centre. They soon raise your pulse and reveal unexpected angles on the city. Afterwards, catch your breath on a bench with a view towards the rivers.
With children, walk to Kaunas Castle and spend time playing on the grass near the rivers’ confluence. Little ones can watch boats and birds while you take a few photographs. If the weather is unsettled, choose a museum or an educational workshop.
Couples can enjoy an evening walk through Old Town courtyards with a stop at an outdoor café. If you are exploring alone, look for street art in Žaliakalnis and along Laisvės alėja. Finish with a seat by the river and make plans for tomorrow.
Live music outdoors or a small poetry reading can make a spontaneous evening out. If you find one, stay for a few songs and chat to local people. Encounters like these often become the highlight of the day.
Walk along Laisvės alėja, explore the Old Town or visit the meeting of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. Other free options include Ąžuolynas, the view from Aleksotas and a self-guided street-art walk in Žaliakalnis.
